The Straight Armbar
Description
This submission is the hyperextension of the arm and elbow joint.
You can apply it from almost any position with some cleverness, most popular from mount and guard, or even from escaping from bottom side control.
The arm is between your legs you hold the hand around the wrist and your hip elevation does the work.
There are multiple opinions regarding how to control the hand holding just the upper arm, the wrist or even grabbing the palm.
A surprise variation can be the flying armbar application. Mostly used in gi fights, because it needs proper hold on the opponent. If you fail to hold yourself, you can easily land on your neck or head.
Application
Basically you control one arm, which you want to crossing your middle line. Then one leg cuts under the armpit the other crosses the head/neck. So your hip should be around the shoulder upper arm level above the elbow to be able to hyperextend it.
Tips
- squeeze the leg together
- concentrate on the correct bending angle, the thumb of the hand can help
Variations
there are plenty follow-ups from failed or not properly closed positions, like: from triangle, from gogoplata
Possible Damage
broken/dislocated elbow joint
Prevention Tips
- Do not allow to pull your arm across his center line
- pull out your elbow
- help with other hand to avoid straighten your arm
